What is web hosting?
Table of Contents
A web hosting is a type service to hosts websites for clients provided by hosting company. As practically we can’t use our own computer to host our websites and pages due to limitations of uptime and solid infrastructure, we use web hosting platforms to host our website by giving them their hosting fee.
Types of web hosting
There exists various types of web hosting depending upon the need of customers. It can be for beginners that is grabbing less traffic to a heavy websites with huge traffic and data transfers.
Shared web hosting
This type of site is for beginners or those whose site doesn’t mean to grab enormous amount of traffics. Actually multiple sites ranging from a few sites to hundreds of websites are placed on the same server and share a common resource. This is cheap and affordable.
Reseller web hosting
This type allows clients to become web hosts themselves. Resellers could function, for individual domains, under any combination of these listed types of hosting, depending on who they are affiliated with as a reseller. Resellers’ accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own virtual dedicated server to a co-located server.
Dedicated hosting service
The user gets his own Web server and gains full control over it (user has root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, the user typically does not own the server. One type of dedicated hosting is self-managed or unmanaged.
This is usually the least expensive for dedicated plans. The user has full administrative access to the server, which means the client is responsible for the security and maintenance of his own dedicated server.
Virtual Private Server (VPS)
Also known as a Virtual Dedicated Server divides server resources into virtual servers, where resources can be allocated in a way that does not directly reflect the underlying hardware. The users may have root access to their own virtual space.
Customers are sometimes responsible for patching and maintaining the server (unmanaged server) or the VPS provider may provide server admin tasks for the customer (managed server).
This is a new type of hosting platform that allows customers powerful, scalable and reliable hosting based on clustered load-balanced servers and utility billing.
A cloud hosted website may be more reliable than alternatives since other computers in the cloud can compensate when a single piece of hardware goes down.
Alternatively, the lack of centralization may give users less control on where their data is located which could be a problem for users with data security or privacy concerns.
What should you look as a beginner to select web hosting?
If you are going to get tons of traffic with extensive use of resources, then cloud hosting or VPS is recommended. But a beginner is not supposed to get such huge traffic initially and also you might have tight budget.
So, here we recommend a shared web hosting that is perfect to start with. It is cheap and and also reliable. You would not face any problem of down-server untill you use it under limit. Once your site become popular and started getting plenty amount of traffics, you can switch to cloud or VPS at any time with ease. Whichever type of hosting you choose, always make sure you choose a reputable vendor. As Hari Ravichandran often mentions in his interviews, most people don’t usually think of all the ways their data can be exploited. Always make sure you protect yourself as best as you can online.
Definitely, as a beginner you run sort of money. Need not to mention that you should go with affordable hosting plans. Some people might say you to select higher hosting plans to give boot your business from start. But this is not economical as you can switch to higher plans at any time with ease in future.
Storage is the resource provided by your hosting provider where all your files are stored. The equation is clear, the more storage you have, more smooth your site will run, similar to your PC.
But as a beginner, 100GB amount of storage is sufficient to work. Majority of the people even don’t use it full. It is better to choose HDD storage over SDD storage as it gives more speed.
This concept is similar to your PC. The more RAM you have, more fast your website will load. As a starting plan, majority of the hosting company provides 2GB RAM that will work, but i will recommend to go with 4GB RAM that is fine to run your mid-range business.
This is the amount of data that transfers each month every time your website loads. When visitor open your site, it consumes bandwidth for loading all the contents in your site. The more content (images, texts, animations, videos etc) in your site has, more bandwidth it requires to load.
Majority of the hosting company caps on the amount of bandwidth your site use. Some even company also depicts their bandwidth as unlimited but that’s not the fact. Your site will down if you exceed your monthly limit.
But by optimizing your site (using few images, medium quality image, keeping your page simple etc), you can handle lots of traffic even within the capped bandwidth.
Number of sites
The very basic plans of almost all the hosting services give you the ability to host only single website. But i will recommend to go with multiple site plan. This way you can host multiple websites on the same resource and make more profits.
